the one that was yellow and black with the white sponsor panel in the

The pristine, white 53 cm Eisentraut went for $1026. Surprise to me? Anyone else?
Despite his somewhat reclusive behavior and lack of interest in his older bikes, Albert Eisentraut HAS to be viewed as one of the most important figures in modern USA bicycle making history.
His late 1960s and 1970s A frames are really amazing craft pieces, functional as fine bikes but also sculpturally interesting in form and execution. In striking contrast to so many "plug-and-play" frames, Eisentraut A's are artfully executed, carefully contrived statements of the builder's aesthetic vision.
His stylistic approach has deeply influenced subsequent builders. If there ever was a USA bike that ought to be collectible, an Eisentraut A frame is one of them.
At least that is my opinion...

While I regret selling every bike I ever sold I REALLY regret selling my
Eisentraut. Back then-1972-there weren't As or Limiteds, just Eisentrauts. It was black, beautifully done and if it had been a couple of cms bigger I'd still be riding it. Phil Brown San Rafael, Calif.

One small problem: it is virtually certain that that Eisentraut is not a
custom "A" frame. It is a very nice production frame called a Rainbow. Eisentraut made the Rainbow in the mid to late 80s, early 90s. There usually
was a Rainbow decal on the headtube, but maybe the frame was repainted and it wasn't replaced. If you google search on Eisentraut Rainbow and follow one of the links you 'll see a picture of a Rainbow frame in Shaw's bike
shop in Santa Clara CA. That one has the headtube decal but otherwise is
identical to the one on ebay. Nice frame, just not an "A" frame.

Just an additional note on Eisentraut frames. I am lucky to have two:
A 1972 61cm frame bought at Missing Link on the UC Berkeley campus.
A 2007 59cm frame with an Eisentraut stem just delivered.
A new frame every 35 years whether I need it or not...
I also have 2 Eisentraut "cousins" in the sense that I took one of his first
framebuilding classes (along with Bruce Gordon) in May of 1974 so the two frames I built afterwards are related in some little way. These were built in the late 70s.
You can see these three older bikes at:

Thanks for that clarification, Jim. I did not go look at the frame in question but was strictly referring to the "A" frames.
The Limiteds and Rainbows "had their issues", quality varied, detailing & handwork wassignificantly less... Although certainly ridable bikes and fully functional, they were attempts at high production and simply cannot be placed at the same level as the A frames.
Last time I visited Terry in Santa Clara he had a Rainbow still in
stock!?
In fact you can see that frame in the CR coverage off his shop here:
http://www.classicrendezvous.com/
Note that the Rainbow had it's seat stays mitered to the seat lug, a familiar treatment done by many builders, vs the "fastback" integral binder bolt treatment (takes more work) of many of the A frames..

Quoth Alan Weeks:
I regularly ride two bikes that were considered lightweights by the manufacturer when they were built in the mid-1940s though I question whether the first generation of Schwinn Continental is considered "on topic" here.
The classic definition of "lighweight" was anything with a tire size narrower than 1 1/2".
My next internal hub project is to use an AW with two cogs on an early '60's Viking. I have yet to try fitting the hub in place but I'm thinking that the Viking's Cyclo-Benelux derailleur should handle the two cogs.
Maybe not. The old coil spring Cyclo Beneluces were sized for different width clusters. Yours may have too much travel, which would put it at risk of shifting into the spokes.
The cage is typically marked with what freewheels it is intended for, such as 5 x 3/32 , 4 x 3/32/3 x 1/8, etc...

Dear List:
If we're talking about the seat stays here as having "never" been copied:
http://www.classicrendezvous.com/
then I know of two builders who copy it (or at least are in the same ball park).
Version 1:
http://www.flickr.com/
and version 2, even closer:
http://www.flickr.com/
Neither is exactly a copy, perhaps we should call them tributes by two Eisentraut disciples: Bruce Gordon and Marc Nobilette. I've spent time staring at both lugs trying to visualize how to make them, and I end up dizzy trying to see how you could not only make one side, but keep em symetrical left and right. Mr. Nobilette looked at my frame at this year's Cirque, and said it was made back when he cut everything by hand.
