I've a problem with the Sturmey Archer FM I'm installing on my 1958
RRA Moderne. At first it had no direct gear, so I opened it up and
found the low gear pawls were installed upside down and the springs
for the gear ring pawls were shot. Fortunately everything else
looked OK and I put it back together, carefully following the
instructions on Tony Hadland's site.

Now it shifts OK and all gears engage. But now there is an unusual amount of drag, in low gear only. This is whether turning the pedals forward or backwards. On the stand it's easier to turn the cranks in 2nd than in low. The wheel coasts OK. The drag is noticeable only when turning the cranks in low.
BTW I did bottom the RH cone and back it off 1/2 a turn.
Any suggestions? Could this be normal? I can overhaul AWs FWs and S5s in my sleep, but this is my 1st FW.
