You are right. They are also stiffer in the lateral plane offering better handling/cornering. So, better on the rear and the front, going up or downhill. Any idea that there is more flex in a high flange must be propaganda from the Ministry of Silly Bicyclery. Dave Holland Browns Summit, NC, USA

Sorry if I missed this in my scan of posts and archives, but is torque a consideration on the rear wheel? Esp. when sprinting or climbing, my ignorant brain imagines that a high flange rear hub would give a more direct energy transfer from the freewheel to the rubber on the road.
