Finally some nice feedback! Thanks gals and guys. I would submit that first geometry and then position on bike have most to do with handling, frames, forks and wheels being straight and in order. I was riding a steel Medici when I got a nifty Raleigh 753 road bike. The first time out on the 753 I went to go around a 90degree street corner and the bike turned so quickly I almost ran into the curb with a brand new bike!! Help! I quickly retrained myself. I hadn't been on a track bike in about 20 years and when I got chance and rode the new ADT board track in LA with my old Rickert track iron it handled so quickly that it took me about 5 minutes get used to the steering and balance. My new off topic Calfee carbon handles on the road like our old track bikes did in the '50's, but as quick handling as it is on the road, the carbon absorbs enough of the road shock to allow easy criterium riding with about a 74degree seat tube. My old medici had about a 73 seat tube and the Raleigh 753 had the tube at 74. Coupled with the fork rake , head angle , and subsequent trail, those factors made all the diff in handling, balance, control, comfort, etc. Then add the position to the mix, fore and aft location, stem length, saddle behind BB, and one gets some interesting variations in rideabillity. Now we haven't even gotten into riding style, pedaling, shoulders, arm pull, etc. How about wheel base and front end centers. We've had some dog Italian bikes in the smaller sizes that should have been in the rodeo or better yet an anchor on a boat in the Dead Sea. Dale in his good heart loaned me a bike at the Cirque a few years ago that almost threw me off. I had to cut my ride in half because I was fight the lunging, flopping bike the whole way. Dale tried it when I got back and couldn't believe it. Needless to say he retired the steed to the glue factory, or wall hanger status. What all of you have mentioned about the older bikes is quite true on stability and handling. The newer bike materials give the riders a measure of grace, and riders can in general get used to their bike with it's vageries within reason. Remember also that the top riders have a whole different bike handling ability and we have to work at it to become more efficient. So learn your bike's quirks, and practice those skills. Your bike is one thing, your body and it's limits quite another. But geometry and position is the start. How many of you over or under steer your cars when you change from sports car to sedan or pickup?
