And I find Matthauser pads to modulate very nicely with Campagnolo brakes--still have Matthausers in good shape on a couple bikes with Record brakes and get good performance for modulating during canyon descents.
This discussion of Weinman vs. Campagnolo brakes might tolerate a mention of the SunTour Superbe Campagagnolo copies. That's the brake that bridged me between Mafacs and Campagnolo. Teenage racer that I was in the late 70s I fell prey to the bad word of mouth that Mafac brakes had (Mafac uses in the TdF supposedly had to lean on Campy-equipped riders on alpine descents and were pardoned if they uttered "Mafac" as explanation). Couldn't afford the campagnolo brakes on my before-school phlebotomist paycheck, but the Superbe brakes were beautiful just like the Records (much better finish than Weinmans to this teenager), half the cost, and had the red colored pads that (now I know) are better than stock Record pads and much like Matthausers. Those Superbes served me well for a couple years till my first Record brakes, but they look and work just as well 30 years later. And a few years ago I returned the Mafacs to the Gitane and they deserve none of the bad word of mouth I heard back then and are silent with Matthauser pads.
