Be sure you have British size (9.5mm) cotter pins for British cranks. French and Italian are a bit smaller. Also, I have a pair that measure 9.49mm and a bunch I got on eBay, which are 9.27mm and would go in deeper. If yours are like that, they may look like they need to be shimmed.
