Subject: [CR]ebay auction now over: naked De Rosa SLX

I was intrigued enough by this frame to try to snipe it today:

http://ebay.com/<blah> geName=ADME:B:WNA:US:1123

I had visions of a Joe Bell paint-job in Molteni orange with Merckx graphics..like one of the 70s commemoratives or something.

anyway, I bid what I thought was reasonable (it is exactly my size, and, oddly, not too many De Rosas like this one come along in a 56cm c-t..most are 57 or taller, it seems, for some time, anyway, on ebay)...my snipe was swamped by a couple of bidders who appeared to really want it. They bid several times before the auction ended and the one who bid the most times, won it at what seems to me to be a rather high price.

Ah well. I wouldn't not have wanted it for that much. By the time you pay for shipping, and paint, you have well over a grand in it. Seems like a lot in the end. I was wondering if my reaction was sensible, or if I'm being irredeemably cheap..<g>

These are just mass-produced frames, nice enough for what they are, but nothing so special really. I think the power of imagination took over for those bidders and they offered more than was reasonable. Interesting how a naked frame can sometimes go high (I've seen that before)...the buyers imagining that they'll do to make it their own.
