I have been offered, and will soon be receiving an early 80's Trek 700 seri es frameset from a friend in Canada for my next build. There has been some discussion on what exactly this trek is. And since he has been a bit slow about getting the serial number off it for me as the frame, I thought I mi ght throw the question out to the list to see if it can be positively ID'ed .

Here's what I know: Dark metallic blue in color, pewter colored seat tube panel, but no contrasting color on the head tube. Built of Reynolds 531, s tates 700 series on the top tube. The stays are obviously not as long as a 720, has single eyelets front and rear, no braze-ons for a rack on the sea t stays. My best guess is a 1983 700 other have thought it to be an 1982 7 50 or 710 (which is why the photo is labeled as such).

The real question mark is the non-contrasting head tube which seems to have me, the current owner, and several others rather stumped. As there is vir tually no information or examples of these frames out there that I have bee n able to locate I'm unable to verify if other frames were produced with an d/or without the contrasting color on the headtube. Did trek change up the color scheme, perhaps for "Canadian" models if there were such a thing?
Strangely enough, even before I was offered this frame, I had purchased a p artial early 80's suntour superbe group to use for my next ride, which happ ens to be original equipment on the 1983 Trek 700. Original spec shows a S uperbe Tech rear derailleur where I will be using a Cyclone GT, and there a re a few other minor differences in the build list, but she will be largely originally equipped once again.
Thanks in advance for any information, I'm really hoping the owner is able to retrieve the serial number soon. The bike is at the shop he works at and he is currently hurt from an on the job injury a couple of months ago whic h is slowing him down just a bit.
