Subject: [CR]how to remove brownish rusty grime from decal areas of old frame?

Hi Everybody, I've just taken delivery of a heavily patina-ed 1955 Bianchi CDM. I don't intend to re-paint but would like to clean it up as much as possible. The frame was covered by a brownish haze. The areas of the frame where the decals aren't cleaned up nicely w/ a bit of fine polishing compound, but I'm afraid that if I apply the same treatment and elbow grease to the decals that they'll further deteriorate, which I'd like to avoid. Any suggestions for removing this stuff without damaging the artwork? Chuck Taylor Boston, Massachusetts USA
