It seems to me that there was a good write-up about all the wheel and tire factors in one of those books called "Serious Cycling" or "High Tech Cycling". I forget which now, but published by same company. Maybe someone has those books on hand and can check it out and see if they have any studies cited there? I seem to recall mention of the differences in tread design and tire width for time trial performance. I'm pretty sure that they said that a slightly wider tire was faster, which seemed counter intuitive at the time.

By the way, I have photos of many the different Clement cotton and silk tires from the 1970s, including the following below if someone needs to see them.

[RED] (label says) CLEMENT CLEMENT SETA CLEMENT CRITERIUM CLEMENT Elvezia 75 Latex

[YELLOW] CLEMENT CRITERIUM SETA CLEMENT CRITERIUM SETA "Servizio Corsa" CLEMENT Super Condor (SC in blue)

[GREEN] CLEMENT CRITERIUM SETA EXTRA
