I understand your point Peter, but who is bashing gas pipes? Or is that another thread (...) I missed?

But a question for the whole list, why are we spending energy and band width bashing any bikes? It's like talking about someone's sister.. There is no possible positive outcome, just bruised feelings.

How about we talk about superlatives! How great a Masi is built? What are the details & features that make it so refined? Then, by acquiring that ability to discern finer hand work,? we know that Raleighs are not as nice.... but we are not rubbing folks (who have a nostaglic connection with Raleighs) noses in it.

Tasteful hesitation to slam stuff? to seems to be basic "civility" to me. Statements like "Blank sucks" are uncivil discourse. It may be true, but why would someone get off by saying it out loud like this?

Personal example: I was talking to John Provetero about the very nice and new-to-him McLean bike he brought to show me today (http://www.classicrendezvous.com/USA/McLean/McLean_provetero.htm)

While chatting, a particular KOF builder's name came up. Now this fellow makes very clean and well constructed bikes, but they are a dud to me. These frames are plugged together from bog stock bits, minimal filing and minimal "personality. I blurted that opinion out and immediately realized how unnecessary and boorish that comment was. John (I think) absolutely loves this guy's stuff and I know quite of few of my friends on this CR list do too. I have kept my yap shut for a long time...until now, and now I deeply regret having opened my mouth about it. How inconsiderate? to zap a builder when it is just my opinion that no one asked for nor probably gives a crap about.

Ya'll think about all this next time before you want to post a bike-trashing message...

Regarding Mark Winkelman's comment "So us sitting around here saying one bike is better than another bike, is?

like saying a Chevy is better than a Ford. It's all perspective, baby!",? ?

the topic moved into quality of frame construction. The opinions of a builder (Brian Baylis) and a bike shop employee/repairer (Dean Patterson) are useful datapoints for determining where Raleighs sit on the scale of build quality. If others like Raleighs for reasons than build quality, than those are datapoints for something other than build quality. Depends on the reasons for which you collect, but many do strive to collect with build quality as a key consideration. I don't hear about many gaspipe bike collectors or Ted Williams Free Spirit collectors on this CR list. If people can bash gaspipe bikes, than can they bash Raleighs?? ?
