One (of) America's top endurance cycling events, the Furnace Creek 508 (miles), is celebrating its 25th anniversary in a very cool way -- with a special Classic Rendezvous Division in which the technology used can't be newer than 1983. This means the bike's frame and fork must be lugged steel, plus there can't be more than 6 cogs on the rear wheel, each wheel must have at least 32 spokes, only toe clips and straps are permitted, and gear changes must by accomplished with down-tube friction shifters or bar-cons. The actual equipment can be brand new, but the technology can't be beyond what was on the market in '83. The 508, which crosses Southern California's Mojave Desert, starts on Oct. 4.
