The Simplex 543 rear gear only uses two cables at the very rear of the transmission system. The main cable runs from the gear lever all the way to the toggle chain on the rear gear and controls the throw of the gear. The second cable is connected to the main cable with a solderless niple just in front of the twin cable stop on the chainstay and at the other end to a device on the rear gear that 'automatically' adjusts the chain tension.
