While we're picking over the details of the rules, I'll weigh in on the wheels. In 1984, Elaine Mariolle started RAAM on a pair of 28-hole large-flange Record hubs laced to Mavic CX-18 tubular rims, shod with 230-gram Criterium Seta Extras (the green label tubulars we all coveted in the day), all of which had been available for at least a year. And #1 frame that year was not lugged steel, but fillet brazed. Classic stuff, yes, but not allowed by the rules. So what does this mean? Nothing, really. As has been said before, Chris Kostman's rules are about the spirit of riding classic stuff. And relying on one's own power, rather than trying to buy speed with cash, which seems to be the direction that so much of the bike world is going today.
