I just happen to have been given a copy of Rino Negri's book yesterday. It has wealth of information about the hour record attempt. Unfortunately, my Italian still has some way to go to understand all the nuances of the language. This would be a great book to be translated (or has it been already?).

Regarding applying Windsor decals the book says that privlege costs 3 million lire, and was done for publicity. My understanding of the passage is that EVERYONE knew that they were Colnago bikes.

The hour record bike weighed 5.750 kg.

Colnago is quoted as having told Mexican journalist that the hubs, headset, and crankset were made by Campagnolo of ultra-light material, the same as some components of the OSO 6 satellite launched by NASA from Cape Kennedy.

Upon waking up on the record day Merckx's weighed 75kg, his pulse was 48 and blood pressure 50-125.

It's a 200 page book with lots of info...lots of reading ahead.
