whoa. that sheldon link seems a little drastic. when i've had really bad chains, i get an extra jar and put a little automotive transmission fluid in it. let the chain soak a few days. put something down so you don't get tranny fluid all over the place and lay the chain out, scrub it with something. it'll be all clean. then i use some automotive brake cleaner to clean it off real good. i replace the chain and lube it with something. works ok.
