I've used plumber's tape (teflon tape) on bottom bracket threads. The bott om bracket threads on my '52 Claud butler are worn so badly that the cups w ouldn't stay tight otherwise. It currently has Italian threaded cups with teflon tape and the cups have stayed tight.
