There was a time when good bikes were upgraded rather than traded-in or trashed. I've got some very old frames with the same set-up you're suggesting. To me, that's a sign that the bikes were loved AND ridden.
Heck, I bet when most of us were young we upgraded our components whenever we could afford better equipment. That was the right thing to do under the circumstances. If the bike feels right, and is a keeper, do to it whatever you want ... it's your, isn't it?
