I have a set of old GB brakes here (also from Hilary) and looking at the pad holders from the rear (open) end, there is a longitudinal groove in the back of the pad. If I wanted to remove these, I would drive a small screwdriver down the groove to pop out the pad. In many cases, trying to just force old pads out through the open end is futile. If there is no groove like I have, maybe a screwdriver would still work.
