An alternative thing you might try is to convert your french hubs to english hubs. It might be possible to melt some aluminum foil, with something as simple as holding a match to the aluminum (holding it just the right angle, so the blue flame peaks on the aluminum.)
Disclaimer : I've never tried this, so don't try this with your maillard 700 gems, i'd recommend you try it on the cheapest atom or normandy hubs you can find, or your first attempt.
