Frames with the hole drilled in the "brake"-bridge were usually not equipped with a rear caliper brake, but with a rear drum- or coaster-brake. The hole was just used to mount the rear fender. These little things were needed when you wanted to mount a caliperbrake in such a frame. I used one of these (but not a Weinmann) when I converted my fathers old Goericke 26' touring bike to a kind of MTB being 14 years at that time and wanting a MTB so dearly.... Well, things you regret later... Later I learned that a lot of Peugeot touring bikes from the 70ies were also drilled that way and used these thingies.

Those posts are the first from that manufacturer I have seen. Some French b ikes from the 60's, maybe 50's, mainly heavy demi-course types had a back b rake mounting hole drilled vertically through the bridge, not horizontal as normal. The technical reason for this I can't remember, if there was one. Mostly you will find bikes with this mounting type equipped with Mafac Dura l, or more likely CLB, in both cases centerpull. Both Mafac and CLB had pro prietray back plates, sometimes an inegral part of the brake (some CLB). So , you are looking at a unusual item I'd guess, Weinmann weren't often fitte d as standard with that fixture. Nick March, Agen, 47000 Lot et Garonne, France

" Just saw these on ebay, and am guessing that they fit cantilever brake bosses or something, but I'm stumped:

I'm sure that someone out in CR land can enlighten us...

Thanks,
