Subject: [CR]More Schwinn belt and suspenders

Recently discussed the Schwinn "belt and suspenders" mindset in connection with the double chainguards on the TA Cyclotourist and my 1973 Schwinn Spor ts Tourer, and similar chainguards on he Nervar Sport more commonly found o n this Schwinn model.

Recently came across yet another example of Schwinn conservatism.  I just bought several old Schwinn-approved randonneur bars (GB) derailleurs (Shim ano) and freewheels (Normandy, Atom and Shimano).  The freewheels all hav e a thin steel chainguard to keep the chain from derailing off the outside cog.  Actually used one of the French made ones today on a mid-70's Gitan e to solve the problem I recently discussed of wider Japanese FW's sometime s not leaving clearance between chain and chainstays.  The Schwinn chaing uard didn't look right on a Gitane plus reduced clearance, but fortunately it is drilled with two holes and easily removed with a pin wrench.  Anyon e know when Schwinn used these freewheel guards, and what models they a ppeared on?  I don't thiink I've ever seen one on the Regina FW's typical ly supplied on Paramount.
