Hi Steve,

Jay's questions originate from his attempt to assist me in finding parts or hubs. I have a '80 Trek with 600 hubs, and my rear axel broke. The right rear bearing cone is also shot, and is probably either the result of, or a contributing factor to the broken axle.

There is another gentleman from this forum who is offering to send me his old set of hubs, which I have gladly accepted. The condition of his cones might be suspect. He refers to them as "ridged". It's unclear just yet if he is seeing some intentional machined feature, or if they have grooves worn into them.

Can you tell me more about the condition of your hubs, particularly axels and cones?

Thanks Greg Hastings Bend, Oregon

hi Jay,

I've got Bike Warehouse catalog from March 1980, and it lists both the plain 600 hubset (i.e. designed for freewheels) as well as the 600EX freehub set (i.e. designed for cassettes). The cassettes shown in the catalog were 6 speed.

I can't offer any info on the '83 600EX parts. Was further info sought?

I do own a set of the plain 600 hubs, and had used them from 1976 to the late 80's. Good, basic hubs. They are taking up space in my parts box, in case anyone has an interest in them....
