I've used neatsfoot oil. The special property of this stuff is that it readily soaks into rubber and appears to disappear, leaving no tackyness or slippery coating. It gets rid of the whiteness of old gum hoods but doesn't soften them up too much.
I once had a large drop of this oil fall into the tread of a tire (Avocet inverted tread) while oiling a saddle. I briefly forgot about it but when I went to wipe it off the next day it was GONE.
