Oops.  Trying to finish the email in a hurry, I got it wrong way round.   The Retrofriction barcons, of course, have less resistance, perhaps act ually a spring assist, when shifting to a larger cog, and more resistance a gainst the spring when shifting to a smaller cog, just like the DT shifters .  The idea, of course, is to make the shift to the large cog easier, whi le preventing the RD slipping out of gear and onto a smaller cog on a steep climb.  Haven't installed these yet, but if they work as well as the Ret rofriction DT shifters, they will be nice indeed.  I will confess Campy C -Record DT Retrofrictions also work quite well, although they were clearly copying the Simplex design nearly a decade later.  I'm not sure if Campy ever made a retrofriction non-indexed barcon.  I guess in a sense the Sun tours are semi-indexed as when shifting to a larger cog one could count cli cks, but not when shifting to a smaller cog.

I think there are at least two different types.  The type used in the 60' s, including I think by Tom Simpson, who seems to have favored barcons, wer e very similar to the Campy barcons at the time. relatively slender straigh t levers, typically with blue hoods.  I don't have a pair of these, but I 'm pretty sure they are pure friction.  The pair I am holding in my hand

have beefier, slightly curved levers and black hoods.  I haven't torn the m apart to see how they work, but they definately have more resistance when shifting to a larger cog than when shifting to a smaller one, but like Ret rofriction DT shifters.
