The Challenge Criterium Seta Classic Tubular is the reincarnation of the Clement Criterium Seta, the tire of dreams. In our youth, we could never afford to roll on such finery, instead having to stick to inexpensive Barums or Panaracers after we flatted Vittorias just too quickly. But we were aware enough to have had some serious tire envy. You knew it was an important race when someone rolled up to the line sporting Criterium Setas on her Fiamme rims. If you didn't notice it during the race, you noticed as the racer was packing up at the end of the day. He was wiping down the tire, cleaning both the tread and sidewall, airing it dry, then rolling on his arc-en-ciel adorned Campagnolo tire covers.
The Seta is back. Challenge has the same machines, same people, same assembly as Clement, because these are the people who used to work for Clement. They acquired the company and have re-launched the tire. They're still making tires by hand. The tread still is glued on to the casing when the casing is under pressure, meaning the tread won't deform when the tire is pumped up. Hand-gluing is rarely seen these days; it is limited to Challenge, Dugast, and FMB. This results in a tread that grips better.
But the really big deal is that the casing is made from silk. More than just a time trial jersey material, silk is a light and strong fiber that, when worked properly, can become a light and strong casing. If you thought high TPI cotton casing was special, this is special squared. Thinner, more supple. As you know, a supple casing deforms more easily and precisely, allowing for better road grip and better resistance to flat-causing sharp items. The only drawback of silk casings is that you need to put them away dry or the moisture on the casing will slowly rot the tire. Race 'em in the wet, but air dry before going into the wheel bags.
Inside that silk casing resides a seamless latex tube. Latex tubes are lighter and more supple than butyl. So they ride better on the road and bend around foreign objects that could flat a butyl tube. The only price for the tube is you'll have to add air to your tires before each ride.
To better protect the tube from flatting, there is a belt of corespun polyester, 300 tpi polyester, placed between the casing and the tread, and is glued on when the casing is under pressure. They call this their Puncture Protection System (PPS), giving a little more protection under the tread while leaving the sidewalls thin and supple.
The Challenge Criterium Seta Classic Tubular tire has a 700c diameter and is 21mm wide. The casing is made of silk. There is a seamless latex tube inside. It has Challenge's Puncture Protection System (PPS). While the tire has been tested to 200psi, most people will probably ride pressures between 110-130psi. The tire has a Black tread and Tan casing. The weight is 260g.
