This actually makes for an interesting observation/discussion, considering the recently ended eBay auction by speedbicycles. In that auction, there was offered NOS/NIB Superbe track crankset, bottom bracket, low-flange hubs, lock ring and a DID chain. 29 bids pushed the price up to $690, which didn't meet reserve.

For a number of years now, I have been trying to put together a complete NOS Superbe track group, with some success. In a way, my group is more complete than the eBay offering, since I have a crankset, BB, pedals and a headset. I did manage to score a more desirable high-flange hub set a while back, but they are used and didn't include a Suntour lockring. They are nice, but I've still been sort-of holding out for that NOS pair to really complete the group. However, I've watched the prices for Suntour Superbe stuff climb pretty significantly, especially in recent years. Track components in particular, but even a used pair of Superbe road crank arms (no rings or bolts) sold recently for $132.50.

It's interesting to watch the old supply-and-demand market at work, and see "collectors" appreciating/desiring things that a few short years ago were more often had on the cheap, or even passed over. It's all inevitable, of course, but there's a LOT less Superbe stuff out there, because Suntour had so much less market share, especially in the higher-end segment.

The part that started me on my quest for a group was an NOS, boxed track pedal set, that I bought a a swap meet for $20. Can't remember exactly how long ago that was, but considering what that pedal set is probably worth now, Superbe stuff is probably out performing the stock market. Still, when I find that hub set, I'll take all that stuff out of the boxes and mount it on my Trek track frame. That's just the way I am, and what the parts are for.

Cheers

Hey Wayne,

I too followed with interest the recent ebay auction for the NOS Superbe track group offered by speedbicycles. I would guess this group (fluted cranks, campy style large flange hubs) was from the late 70's to early eighties. Do you know in which year Suntour modified their track group with more "modern" Suntour Superbe PRO parts - i.e. beveled cranks without flutes, high flange hubs without the slots and with a gold foil ring on each side? When did they stop making this group? Also when did they start applying NJS to their track parts?
