The only cable manufacturer I am familiar with is Weinmann. This would be the original European company not subsequent company's which might have or still do use the name.
All cables were made with the cable formed into a pear shape (or ball shape) prior to having the lead end formed over it. So Wayne's illustration of the formed cable end fits my memory of the Weinmann cables.
I know that many competitors did not use this design feature but simply used a cast end over a straight cable.
