Having in fact broken the covers trying to remove them, I learned the drill the hard way.  There is a pin on the cover that pushes into the hole in the fixing bolt.  You can use a small screwdriver blade or small allen wr ench to push the pin out from the backside of the DO.  Then the cover can be removed without damage and you can unthread the fixing bolt with the pr oper size allen wrench.  The cover was a pretty dumb design IMHO, which n o doubt led to lots of broken ones.  You can actually press the cover bac k on after you've broken off the pin, but it stays in place much better if it isn't broken.

Checking the archives there is some discussion of this derailleur. One person mentions how it is attached to the rear hanger. But I cannot figure out how to unattach (is that a word?) a rear Duopar from the hanger. It ha s a cover where the head of the attaching bolt is, and this cover does not appear to be capable of being removed, though it could, but it looks as if I would have to break it to do so. On the backside of the bolt coming throug h the hanger, there is a hole in the center of the bolt. The message from th e archives mentioned that it is removed by inserting a tool into this hole an d unscrewing it. I have attempted to use every allen key size I have that fits into the hole but I cannot find one that will lock onto anything. Could someone please offer some advice for the proper (I have already thought of a lot of improper ways) removal of this derailleur? And if it i s allen key, what size?

Thank you.
