Clem, IMHO There's no improper way to do it as long as it works for you.

I spend most of my time on the hoods so here's how I did it on my 1957 Raleight RRA Moderne http://bikesmithdesign.com/MyBikes/rra/rra3.jpg

For the top 3 gears it's a bit like using STI but when I need to force it into "Bottom" gear I have to get on the drops and use my thumb.
