Not from the UK, but i brought my bike to the US from Germany once. The answer is - it depends. In this case, it depends on your airline. Most have a fixed rate for "sports gear" (Skiers, surfers etc. face the same problems). As far as i remember, there weren't any size or weight limits, at least i've never seen the extra luggage being weighed. In my case (i flew Lufthansa) the bike box also didnt count as a piece of luggage, so i was still able to carry the 2 suitcases allowed. I recommend callling the airline!
