On Yahoo Japan's auction site sniping was eliminated by a rule that says that the auction ends 10 minutes after the last bid.
As an Ebay buyer I like sniping because I pick my number, set it up and forget it. My worst wins are where I was punching in numbers by hand. As a seller I'd prefer to see less last 10 second pops.
