Dan, I see no one has piped up, so I'll give 'er a shot. I'd say the proof is in the pudding. Normally the first negative side effect of an undersized seatpost is the unwillingness to stay where you put it. If it's not slipping I'd say you're fine. I have noticed that posts do seem to vary a bit in snugness in the frame, and I've had 'em to the point where they won't stay put. Obviously then you need to try a different post. And I'd also add that slightly undersized is a whole lot better than slightly over-sized!
