A couple years ago I ended a 20-year experiment with the A9 headset. I put an A9 in my commuting bike and did absolutely no maintenance on it for 20 years. Then I opened it up and checked the races:

You can see a slight amount of fretting damage on the inside lower race, but really nothing on any of the other races. I cleaned it up, reassembled it and put it back on the bike. It's still working fine now.
