The original CR post:

SUNDAY , NOV 2, (2003)

Fixed-gear and vintage ride, sociable pace, approx. 25 mi, basically out-and-back in Rock Creek Park, DC/MD. Start at Viers Mill Recreation Center, 10:00 AM Sunday. From Beltway ... Silver Spring, MD. We're likely to do lunch afterwards, with a special guest (Carapace Completed Umber!) in town from Boston for his brother's art show gallery the evening before.

regards, Tom Roberson

And I've added photos from that get together too: http://sports.webshots.com/album/562374041wtJIjy

We'll be thinking of you Sheldon. And I'll see many of you in Westminster this Sunday.

Dan Artley in Parkton, MD

There has already been some discussion here at Cirque World Headquarters about what would be a fitting tribute to Sheldon Brown at the Cirque, and I can't think of a better one than making the Fixed-Gear Ride, both this year and into the future, in his honor.

I had communicated with Sheldon for quite a while, but met him for the first time when another fixed-gear ride was organized in his honor here in the DC area. Can't remember exactly when that was, but probably about five years ago. I can't remember all the details, but recall that Sheldon had posted to the CR list that he was going to be in the area, and wanted to try and get together with some of the local list-members. Also can't remember who, but someone felt that a fixed-gear ride was the most appropriate way to celebrate Sheldon's visit, and organized one. It was such a treat talking with, and getting to know Sheldon better. Losing him is surely a sad day, not only for our little corner of the sport, but the sport in general. I can't think of another person that has given so generously of himself to the sport that he obviously loved.

At the end of that ride, I snapped a few pictures as folks were milling around and starting to pack up. I had really forgotten about those pictures, and only this morning went back and found them. I didn't get shots of everyone, but there is a nice picture of Sheldon, sporting the smile that was seemingly ever-present. I've posted those pictures here:

I'm sure others can recall more about this great little gathering, and can fill in some of the details. I know that I will cherrish the memories of that day even more now.

Plan on joining us and riding the fixed-gear ride at this year's Cirque in Sheldon's honor.

Someone already wrote in the subject-line of a tribute posting to Sheldon something that really captures Sheldon perfectly, and will be how I always remember him:
