I'm finding tickets as low as $99.00 each way on Southwest from Long Island, and round-trip tickets for as low as $233 on Delta and United, as opposed to $377 and $358 (respectively) from Newark to Portland ...

So it seems to me like it would be a cheaper flight for many.
