I only sporadically lurk around here, but I couldn't let this one pass. Please excuse ressurecting a semi-stale thread. Singlespeed mountain biking is alive and well. That derailleur is a clamp on version of the derailleur found on the Randonneuring bike I displayed at last year's NAHBS. A few people requested a clamp on version, so I made 5 of them. It was a fun project to share with the visitors at the show. (I have one left if anyone is interested.)
You're right, multi-ration drivetrains are a great idea. So is breaking it back down to one gear and going out for a challenging new experience.
Cheers,
