Being unable to attend, I enjoyed seeing the various photo selections of the event linked on CR. It seems obvious that since, with the exception of Keirin events, steel bikes are no longer routinely used in road or track racing, manufacturers of steel bikes have turned to other markets. These markets are diverse and include exhibition quality racing type bikes, mountain bikes, city cruisers, etc. A great deal of talent and imagination appears to be involved in the design and making of these bikes. Needless to say, such elaborate handmade products are expensive and prospective buyers will have to pay these high costs. News classes of affluent buyers will have to be found, or created, to purchase these novel bikes. I am also fascinated by the contemporary revival of old marques such as Herse. How will recreations (or evocations) of such marques fare in a market that so values originality and disparages most restoration? Time will tell. George
