Hello bike people,
I am Caleb from Baltimore, Maryland USA--just joined the list, as I'm occasionally finding questions that I can't get answered by a quick visit to Sheldon Brown's page, and I've been directed to the archives of CR on several points. My interest in vintage lightweights is expanding, although my typical project is much less exotic that what often comes up here: my goal is to save the world from the $400 hybrid, so I convert/rebuild Japanese road bikes from the 70s and 80s into fast hybrids for friends and family members who are getting interested in cycling and might be tempted to go get a $400 hybrid (if they weren't lucky enough to know me, right?). Various configurations emerge, but they are a variation on a theme, such that my projects end up looking for the most part like inexpensive Rivendells.
Having said that, I DO have frames and projects that I will likely end up asking questions about here on the list: a 1970s Alpine frame, NOS never built, full 531; a 1980 Gino Liotto Super, now missing most of the original Gran Sport equipment, a 1960s Viking Severn Valley 531 touring frame I bought a few years ago from Sam Fitzsimmons, an old Windsor Carerra frame that will likely end up as a fixed gear, and a few others.
If these or any other frames or parts of mine end up for sale on ebay, it will be under "barconshifter," as I am known there. To the extent the etiquette of the CR list permits, I may "out" some of my auctions if I have anything that might be of particular interest to list members.
I look forward to learning a lot and sharing what I can here.
Cheers, Caleb Hawley
