When I first read about this I thought 'great idea'.
Then I put my former racecar engineer's cap on and took a look at the rules:
'Classic Rendezvous Division Rules: - The frame and fork must be lugged steel (but built in ANY year, including brand new). Yes, we know that aluminum bikes existed before 1983, as well as fillet-brazed steel... - No more than six cogs on the rear wheel. - 32 spokes per wheel minimum. - Friction shifting on the down-tube or bar-ends (must be true friction shiters; not clickables set in friction mode). - Toe clips and straps.'
Right so I'm lining up with:
*A lugged stem frame and fork featuring compact geometry and a threadless fork/headset.
*Full 2007 spec Dura Ace components modified as follows: 10 speed cassette modified by removal of 4 sprockets and replacement by spacers.
*Brifters replaced by Tektro 200 aero levers and friction gear levers.
*Carbon fibre triple crankset to give 18 gears covering former 2 x10 range.
*Deep dish carbon aero 'V' rims - 32 bladed spokes per wheel of course.
*Tri bars.
*Toeclips and straps.
Fully compliant with the rules? - Yes.
"Classic Rendezvous" - No.
Back to the drawing board re the rules, Chris.
May I suggest that the rules should also specify in addition to those posted:
*Threaded steerers and quill type stems
*Brake levers to be non-aero type, brakes to be single pivot or centre pull only.
*Carbon fibre and titanium to be banned.
*No more than 2 chainwheels (no triples)
*Rims to have a maximun depth of 19mm (3/4")
*Tri bars banned.

Saw your post on the CR list archives. I saw Dale in Portland recently and he approved the use of the name for this division at our race, and also promised to prepare a prize of some sort for the winner. Here's the full press release. Feel free to post to the CR list. (I've sent this to Dale, too, of course.) I'm not currently a CR list subscriber, but have have been in the past and have also attended two Cirques du Cyclisme.

CLASSIC 508 MILE BICYCLE RACE OFFERS NEW CATEGORY FOR CLASSIC, or CLASSIC STYLE, BIKES
Death Valley, CA -- Held since 1983 and known as "The Toughest 48 hours in Sport," Furnace Creek 508 is the world's premier ultramarathon bicycle race. This non-stop 508-mile bicycle race is revered the world over for its epic mountain climbs, stark desert scenery, desolate roads, and its reputation as one of the toughest but most gratifying endurance challenges available, bar none. The course has a total elevation gain of over 35,000', crosses ten mountain passes, and stretches from Santa Clarita (just north of Los Angeles), across the Mojave Desert, through Death Valley, to Twenty Nine Palms. In 2008, it will be held October 4-6 and will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of its founding by cycling legend John Marino in 1983.
Solo, two-person relay, and four-person relay divisions are offered with over 200 racers expected to compete, comprising the largest field in the history of the race. Designed as an endurance challenge, no drafting or pack riding is allowed in any division. There is a 48 hour time limit for the solo division and a 46 hour time limit for the relay team division.
In honor of its 25th Anniversary, Furnace Creek 508 will offer the Classic Rendezvous Division. The requirements to enter this division - which will be a sub-category of any Furnace Creek 508 division, whether solo, tandem, or 2x / 4x relay - will be to race on technology from 1983 or older. Specifically, this means:
- The frame and fork must be lugged steel (but built in ANY year, including brand new). - No more than six cogs on the rear wheel. - 32 or more spokes per wheel. - Friction shifting on the down-tube, or bar-cons. - Toe clips and straps.
Note: the frame and parts don't have to actually be 25 or more years old; just the technology has to be 1983 or older. "Style points" will be awarded to those whose entire bike, other than the obvious - tyres, cables, chain, brake pads, etc - are from 1983 or older.
