Lou;

There are four points that suggest a repaint... the top tube cable guides, t he brazed on shifters, the painted fork crown and the quality of the paint i tself which seems a tad thick. That last could be forgiven, this being the first batch of frames. And it should be noted that the decals are dead on.. . none of the usual things one often sees in a repaint such as errors in pla cement or slight color differences from later batches. That leaves the firs t three points. The painted fork crown is very unusual for an original bike , but I know of a few cases where this was done (I've been told Jerry Ash an d others occasionally ordered a bike with an unchromed fork). Carlsbad fram es with (original) top tube guides and brazed-on cable bosses are not unhear d of... they were available as an option. The thing that sets these early b ikes apart from later "mods" is that the cable guides were the handmade stra p type with pointed ends that Mario was fond of. I've looked closely at the photos and there is at least a chance this may be so... in the photo of the front guide you can just barely make out what may be a paint chip on the en d of the strap.

I sent the seller a message this morning asking him to confirm with the owne r about the paint but have not heard back as yet (the seller states that the bike is in posession of the original owner who told him he picked the bike up personally at Carlsbad but this is not the same as saying it was never re painted... perhaps the seller is making his own assumptions). I guess shoul d also have asked if he could send a clearer photo of one of the guides but I didn't think of it, serves me right for trying to send emails before I've had my morning coffee.

Seller says this is the 17th Masi made in Carlsbad and that it has the ori ginal paint. I have not seen a Carlsbad Masi with brazed on brake cable eye lets on the toptube, assuming it is original paint. Anyone else care to com ment on this bike? Ebay listing: 150252624320 Lou Deeter, Orlando FL USA
