Blowing my OWN horn! After the fixed ride at LeCirque 2006 I received many complements on MY riding style. In 1948 when I started training with the lads, My coach Jack Simpson stressed constantly the value of a smooooth complete circle pedal stroke. Twiddling was the answer. NOW in my 74th (75 on 7th June at leCirque I hope) After 60+ years on a bloody bike, I am STILL riding maybe not as strong as I was BUT still at it. THIS IS A TRUE STORY! Riding on the trails around Parker. Co. I was passed YES SOMEONE passed ME. by a chap riding a sooper dooper carbon wonder, going like a bat out of hell. met him one day he had a 60+ tooth big chain ring with a 11 back, watching him ride past me was like watching someone in SLOW motion. looked like he was pedaling 30 revs.doing 40+ MPH. I did tell him one day "Dave you need to gear down SPIN NOT PUSH." he is 45 yrs old a weight lifter etc. WELL and this is a fact! I did not see him for a while, then he was WALKING on the trail, " Hi Dave I said have NOT seen you riding for a while" He said "John I BLEW OUT MY KNEES" END OF STORY. The BONESHAKER VCC mag #174 Summer 2007 had an article "A short history of race gearing" read this if you can. Relates direct to this subject. Cheers John Crump OldstilltwiddlingBrit.
