Having done a bit of cleaning up of the 1973 fillet-brazed Sports Tourer now, I have discovered a few surprising things about this model. which may be of interest to those whose interests are not limited to a half dozen Italian marques.
While Nervar cranks seem to have been typical on this model, this particular bike has a rather unusual TA Cyclotourist double. The rings are 54-40, which may indicate this crank is original, since the smallest available ring for the Nervar double more typically supplied on this model was 40T. Perhaps they changed suppliers but kept the same spec for ring size. The crank has something I've not seen before, a double chainguard, one for the outer ring and a second for the inner ring. The two guards are secured to the large ring with six bolts similar to double chainring bolts, using an extra set of holes drilled in the drilled in the 54T ring at a large BCD. I think this is another indication the crank is original, as I've never seen such a crank before and imagine it would not likely have been an aftermarket item.
The gearing seems very high for a touring bike supplied with a Schwinn-badged Crane GS RD. Not only is the the 54T ring awfully large for a double on a touring bike, but the Atom FW is only 14-24, not that low for a tourer. I've already changed out the gears to 50-36 with a 14-32 Simplex FW. Unfortunately, the 50T ring is not drilled for the unusual double chainguard.
Also learned a another new fact about the TA Cyclotourist. The chainring bolts are the old style with domed boltheads to the outside and slotted sleeves/nuts inside the crank, as opposed to the newer style with allen head sleeves outside and hex head bolts inside. I always thought the two types of fasteners could be interchanged, but that is not the case. After changing the rings, I found the chainring bolts would not tighten up completely. The problem is that the old bolts and sleeves are made for an outer ring which does have the countersunk bolt hole found on newer outer rings. When used with newer recessed outer rings, the old domed bolts will bottom out on the sleeve before the rings are completely secured. This could possibly be corrected by shimming the sleeves with washers with a small OD-ID difference, or filing the sleeve, but I just resorted to using newer style hardware. Just another example of the endless variations encountered with TA gear.

Hi,
I wanted to buy some good-quality asian crown races, just in case my campy nuovo races go bad on me at some point. Campy races are now about $15-$25/ea NOS and for my purposes, it would be a waste to source some (1/bike) on speculation that my originals might fail.
I just had great luck getting good crown races for the Tange Levin CDS headset -
http://www.biketoolsetc. com/index.cgi?id=219929870146&d=single&c=Repair- Parts&sc=Headset&tc=Crown-Race&item_id=TA-CDS264
http://tinyurl. com/6nnbol
they seem like a near-identical spares (except they're black) for Tange NL-1500 aluminum headsets, as offered by Cycles De Oro :
http://www.cyclesdeoro.com/
However, thicker races for Campy Nuovo Record Headsets have not been forthcoming. Does anyone have a source for generic / thick headset crown races, for Campy Nuovo-Record headsets???
Thanx in advance,

I think the earlier bikes have the TA crankset. This bike is in the sweet spot because it has the Crane. Earlier ones have the TA cranks but also have the reviled Campy Grand Turismo. The Crane works on the oddball Huret dropout! Maybe with a little adapter if I remember. These bikes came with a Shimano sourced Schwinn approved freewheel, 14-34 with at least the big cog having every other tooth removed. Jerry, I will look for a freewheel. A little bell is going off in my head that somewhere in the 100lb freewheel cache is one of these beauties. The inner guard Jerry mentions is between the two chainwheels and chamfered. It prevents the chain from dropping in the gap.

I
made this "discovery" myself a couple of years ago, and have a word of
caution based on that experience. Those domed bolts are made from
relatively soft metal. Should they bottom out, it's very easy to over-
tighten them and have the domed portion separate from the shaft. I
think the clearances are even extremely tight, even when using the
original style chain rings. So I've been using small washers to be
safe.

Somebody here wanted to know more about Flema and what it means. It ir framebuilder Fritz FLeck of MAnnheim, Germany. He built some nice frames and was one oft first (if not the first) to build in Titanium. Here is a link to a steel Flema just recently posted in Germany's Tour- Forum.

The Big Chief OK'd the request My 1990 ish Ron Cooper currently has a Cinelli stem that opens at the top and I am finding it flexy. I would like to give a ''Frog" stem a try. I need a 100mm version but would try 5mm longer or shorter. This is a user so NOS is not required in fact I would accept any thing that is usable.

The SportsTourer I once had, used NERVAR (TA "cyclotourist type") crank with the outer guard and inner chain guide, the chainrings (if my memory is right) were 54-40.

Hello everyone,
I'm hoping to enlist some help in tracking down a stolen 1986 De Rosa pista. The bike was taken from my storage space in San Francisco along with a host of other valuables. At the time of the theft, it was equipped with Campagnolo C-Record pista group, Cinelli bars/stem, and Mavic CXP-30 rims. The frame is baby blue in color with white decals, chrome round blade fork, and it was made using Columbus SLX tubing. I also have the serial number. Please see the Flickr link below for a photo.
I'm hoping someone out there has seen it or purchased it. I can't imagine a bike of that pedigree not catching the eye of someone here.

This was an article on the 3rd page of the LA Times Sports Section today. Besides the history being made down in Torrey Pines yesterday this seemed to very momentous news and it was buried in the back. Looks to me that AEG and ASO are teaming up against the UCI.
