Often the original vinyl covering cracks and falls off after many years, often with a bit of help from the owner(s). I haven't found a source for ~4.5mm housings, but did find that a 5mm CLB housing/cable kit fit my early 1950's Christophe road bike perfectly, including the ferrules. The original color-matched 4.5mm housings were a sloppy fit in the lever and caliper housing recepticles, so the more modern parts improved on that, as well as performance. The CLB alloy housings with clear covering look great here and the LAM brakes are now excellent with the fitment of some Superbe pads.
