I recall that along with the Raleigh Pro, another of the bikes I lusted after in the mid-70s was a stunning orange/gold Team Nishiki that was displayed at Hawkeye's Outfitters, at the corner of 13th and Oak in Eugene. It was built from Tange tubing and equipped with first-generation Crane/Dura Ace components (side pull brakes) and sew-ups. Esthetically, it was head and shoulders above the Raleigh, and IMHO was on par with the finest Italian bicycles of the era. The Team Nishiki was on the showroom floor and was just my size, and I actually got to take it for a test ride (unlike the Raleigh that was hanging high on the wall of Collins Cycles). Unfortunately, being a poor college student at the time I couldn't afford either the Raleigh or the Nishiki, and I haven't seen another Team Nishiki since.

My 6-page brochure for Nishiki (picked up in 1976, IIRC) shows no "Pro" or "Semi Pro." Top-of-the-line in it is the "Competition," which is pictured with Sugino crank w/chainguard, barcons, suicide levers, randonneur bar, chrome spoke protector, ,kickstand, brake cable secured by 3 clips. Text sez Tange chro-mo DB tubing w/wraparound seat stays. I didn't note down a price, unfortunately. It doesn't look like Nishiki was aiming close to the high end at that time.
