It was the Tin Can Ten that inspired me to ride a late ‘40’ s vintage Schwinn Continental equipped with a Sturmey Archer FW in the fina l event of a local time trial series in 2006. I was pleasantly surprised t o record a time that was within a few seconds of the best time I achieved t hat season on a modern Cannondale. This led me to establish a personal tra dition of riding a vintage bike in the final event of the series each seaso n since. In 2007, I rode an early 1960’s Viking Grand Tour to my b est time to date. I rode the Viking again this year but wouldn’t b e surprised to see another internal hub bike make an appearance next year.

What I’ve found most amazing about the Tin Can Ten is the success o f “shoppers”. Perhaps it’s because I’ve ne ver ridden one, but seeing the fastest time listed for 2005 (and one of the fastest times for any year) being set by a guy on a Hercules Shopper reall y astounds me. I understand that there are any number of technical explana tions as to why this should be perfectly normal, but it just doesn’ t look right to me. Tiny wheels, drop bars????

Regards, Alan
