On some quite nice-looking bikes from early 60-ies, such as on this Hetchins for example:

there is a cable stop for the rear derailleur, but no derailleur hanger. Why is this, was it the norm then (but I think I also saw bikes from the same era that did have hangers) or was there a specific reason? Were all derailleurs then available with optional bolt-on hangers, or only specific models?
