I used a shellac "kit" from Velo-Orange:

Diluted it with 99% rubbing alcohol (most instructions - a copy is included with that kit BTW - advise against using it on the grounds that it contains water - but I guess that is not the case with 99% stuff), worked just fine. I used 3 coats, also my understanding is that it is possible to refresh shellac when it wears out (I believe I read about it on the Riv site at some point, but cannot be sure). Hope this helps.
