I don't know if it has been mentioned, but many of the riders I know from "back in the day" wore gloves precisely for wiping the tires. That's in a ddition to tire savers. Then again, I believe that at the time that was also because everyone rode tubulars. I'd guess that tire savers started to go out when high pressure clinchers became more common.
