The 330 was indeed an entry level "sport touring" frame. My first real bike was one step above it, an '87 Trek 400, which had Reynolds 531. As I recall, Trek went to True Temper the next year, so the '88 date sounds right. Do you have pics? There was a definite decal change from 87-88, so it's easy to see between the years. I believe I still have the '87 Trek brochure, that I'd be happy to scan; if anybody out there is interested in posting it on the web, drop me a line.
I would think you'd be fine light touring on it as long as the frame doesn't have any rust issues from the age. I beat mine up for a long time, first riding around college and then using it as a fixed gear commuter through winter weather for 10-odd years. Finally retired it to my parent's house to use the couple of days a year that I am there, but it still rides very nicely.
